Tricks of the Tail!

Like all border collies, Kane's pretty quick on the uptake. Here are a few things I've taught him to do:

Impatient dog!One evening I got fed up with shouting from the kitchen up to Neil who was upstairs in the "study" ( it's actually full of his computers, so it's really a toy room!) that dinner was ready, so I decided to train Kane to do the job for me. Now when I am ready to dish up, all I have to do is say to Kane “Tell Daddy Dinner’s Ready” and he trots upstairs with a huge smile on his face and nudges Neil (I haven’t seen this for myself of course) to get his attention. It works every time !

We didn't really teach him this, but it's very useful - if the phone or the doorbell rings, Kane's not usually bothered. However, if one of us doesn't answer it fairly quickly, he'll start to bark and rush over to us. If you're ,say, out in the back garden, this really is very helpful.

I used to hate the mess that Kane made when eating biscuits so I thought what a good idea it would be for Kane to eat his treats in one specific place. After a little training, we now say to him “On The Rug” and he duly trots off to eat his goodies.

To make Kane’s walks a little more interesting and fun for him, I taught him to run around the edge of a semi circular path while we cut across the road and try to beat him. He wins most times but sometimes he lets us - considerate, isn't he!

On the walk I've just mentioned, there is a post at the end of the twitten we go to.When we get near, we point to it, saying "round the post" and he runs round it and comes back to us - beaming all over his furry face!
